I sing, write songs, play guitar, and tinker on the piano. I make music that hopefully brings joy to your day, a smile to your face, and a catchy melody that lingers in your head until you fall asleep.

I took piano lessons, sang in the kid's choir at church, learned to play guitar, and sang in every venue available to me, without knowing that all of this was paving the way for my future as a worship leader.

I'm blessed to be able to lead worship in front of thousands of people every week at Willow Creek Community Church. My experiences at Willow over this past year have led to the upcoming release of my second solo album due out in Spring 2010. The first single "Picture of You" is my continual prayer to God that in everything I do I am striving to be more like Him.

Most Wednesday nights, Saturday nights, and Sunday mornings are spent leading worship and giving praise to the loving God who takes my hand when I feel weak, who gives me words when I can't speak, and who offers irresistible grace!

There’s evidence that everyone else feels otherwise—he has sold three million records, charted nineteen No. 1 hits, GRAMMY-nominated and won several major Dove Awards—but Jeremy Camp is tired of himself. Not in any self-deprecating way, but in that positive spiritual sense to which we should all aspire. You can hear him working this out on his sixth recording, We Cry Out: The Worship Project.

“It’s common to say, ‘It’s not about me, God. It’s about You.’ Yet I’m really at that point right now,” Jeremy admits. “The Lord says in Jeremiah 29:13, ‘You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’ But we live in such a distracted society; we let the world’s noise divide our focus and our hearts. Our generation is in desperate need of crying out to God.”

To get himself out of the way, Camp, a rock artist who’s also an ordained minister, makes an intentional return to worship on We Cry Out just as he did for his second album, Carried Me. In this familiar setting, he often steps back from self-written tunes, choosing instead to celebrate and share the latest praise songs by others that have been stirring his own spirit toward revival.

Jeremy explains, “This feels full circle—just coming in to make the record and saying, ‘whatever you want, God.’ A lot of people don’t know that Carried Me was the first project I signed up to do; I was launching as a worship artist. But we ended up debuting with a studio album (Stay), because the content of those original songs related more directly to my personal testimony.” (Camp’s first wife had just passed away months after their wedding when he was 23 years old).

We Cry Out is definitely marked by an air of Spirit-leading at every turn, which results in an easy and rewarding listener experience. Recorded just outside of Nashville with award-winning producer Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, MercyMe), it’s the first all-new set from Jeremy to feature his excellent live band—guitarists Randy Williams and Andy Davis, bassist Walt Smith, drummer Leif Skartland, and keyboard player Jacob Sooter. Their dynamic playing, a confident mix of modern rock and modern worship, flows naturally with their singer’s creative goal here.

“We didn’t want to over think this. It was such a chill project,” Camp says. “I just wanted to be obedient to what God has put on my heart in this time. We had been doing Hillsong’s ‘Mighty to Save’ and Matt Redman’s ‘You Never Let Go’ on tour. I simply asked the band to ‘enter in’ and help me make this an intentionally vertical, corporate worship style album through and through.”

There are two resonant ways to look at the title of We Cry Out. In addition to the aforementioned tracks, audiences will recognize the amped up version of Brenton Brown’s “Everlasting God” (previously recorded by Chris Tomlin) and first single “Jesus Saves” as outward cries for strength and eternal rescue. Most of the other selections are equally passionate declarations of God’s active grace and power, including Jeremy’s emotional take on Desperation Band’s “Overcome” written by Jon Egan.

“When I first heard the song, I thought, ‘I’ve got to record that; it’s getting into my spirit,’” he says. “During the recording, there was a spontaneous moment of worship. The producer raised his hands, and my father was there; he stood up and worshipped. I had to stop singing from all the emotion. We felt God’s Spirit was so thick in that room—and I would never say that lightly.”

Covering Egan’s uplifting song inspired Camp to call and meet the man. In turn, they ended up writing together on “Not Ashamed,” a fist-pumping new anthem with a big chorus that’s already an early favorite among friends. Similarly, Jeremy wrote with Brenton Brown on the title track, a joyful rocker that captures the album’s theme of seeking God’s face and duly responding:

We who called upon Your name cannot be silent / We will praise / We will sing it out / We will cry out to You / Your loving kindness and Your truth / It has delivered us / You have delivered us

Other collaborators on We Cry Out include Matt Maher who helped pen “You Are the Lord” straight from Psalms and Isaiah. The softer, piano-laced tune calls God’s people to raise their voices and features supporting vocals from recording artist Adie, to whom Jeremy has been married for six years; they have two daughters. Adding to the family atmosphere, “The Way” was co-written by Adie’s brother, Brad Peens. With a back-story similar to the late arrival of “There Will Be a Day” on 2008’s GRAMMY nominated album, Speaking Louder than Before, Camp recalls first hearing the song now marked by thundering drums and a South African choir.

“I’m pretty much done with the record when he shares this song, just wanting my opinion of it,” says Jeremy. “I thought it sounded like a worldwide anthem and asked to use it for We Cry Out. It feels like a war song, a cry of God’s glory.”

All creation cries out with longing / with wisdom You always answer / Jesus, You are The Way

We Cry Out closes with two new Jeremy Camp originals that, while indeed personal, really are all about God. “King Jesus” sounds like a future pop/worship classic, victoriously proclaiming with a shout of praise and with our voices raised / One day every knee will bow, behold You in Your glory. “Unrestrained” confirms the unassuming artist’s prayer for himself and all souls:

So take this selfish heart of mine / I want to give it all / And melt away everything that’s not of You / I want to know You more, so much deeper than I do / Completely unrestrained

“That’s where I am today—seeking the face of God,” concludes Jeremy. “I feel like I’ve had a growth spurt the past two years in my walk with the Lord, and I think this album reflects that deepening. There’s a purity behind this record that I can’t even describe. But I didn’t write most of it, so I can’t take the credit. And I love that.”

Everyone else is sure to love We Cry Out: The Worship Project as well.

So how do I start this review? Umm I guess there is no way of beating around the bush so I will just come out and say it. This is not one of my favorite Facedown/Strike First albums this yea; however, that being said it is still a solid release. There we go I said it. So you can keep reading or skip to the comments and let me have it!

Before I get started writing about what I didnt like about the album, I will say that I love For Todays message and ministry, but I just didnt feel like Breaker was as good as I was hoping that it would have been. The album starts off like it is going to be album of the year. For Today kicks it into overdrive with Devastator and The Advocate. Those two songs are some of the best I have heard all year but then that was kind of it. Devastator had my head a bobbin and then The Advocate got me off my couch, but when I was thinking my body was going to fill with metal rage I just kind of sat back down. A few of the songs kind of started out OK but something kind of turned me off. In several of the other tracks like Phoenix, I didnt really care for the gang chants. I usually am a fan of gang chants but these just didnt do it for me. Breaker also lacks a bit of technicality, and suffers from the all too common every track sounds the same. I found myself bored and distracted as well as wanting to listen to Devastator and The Advocate repeatedly. OK, I am done with what I didnt like.

I want to end this review on a positive note. So some stuff I liked about the album: one thing that was actually pretty cool about the album were the numerous bass drops throughout the album. Your subwoofer will definitely enjoy this album. One of the coolest things about the album is on Breaker is the last track The Breakers Commission. Breaker has four spoken/interlude type tracks that are full of encouragement to the weary soul. However, the fourth spoken track starts with some encouragement and about halfway through a gospel choir softly starts singing and builds up to a beautiful chorus of, He is Here, He was There, He Is King, He is Faithful with For Today tearing it up behind them. Actually, if I had to be pinned down this would probably be my favorite track on the album. The arrangement of The Breakers Commission was top notch. For Today continues their in your face love for Christ battle cry that they are so famous for.

Overall: This album was solid but not really top notch like I was expecting. Despite my opinion of this album, I have a feeling that a lot of people will disagree with me. I do appreciate For Todays unashamed love for Christ and their willingness to stand before the masses and spread His Name.

It’s good to revel in life’s rare occurrences. Finding a twenty in your jacket pocket, getting lost only to realise you’ve found a shortcut, or spotting a small herd of deer in a field as you speed by nearly oblivious. It’s these occurrences that help us to occasionally surface from the mire of the routine, to realise the beauty in the monotony. Something new rises up, graceful and honest. Each anomaly forcing upon us a fresh perspective, a new opportunity to let something original change and shape us, if only a little - enter Hark the Herons. Stop. Breathe. Feel. Listen. Love.

The Showdown's new album, Blood in the Gears, represents the band down to its DNA, on the cellular level. Blood allows your body to survive. Gears make machines move. This rifftacular Tennessee band's gears are greased with the blood of their passion. And the end result is electrifying.

While some bands that experience membership changes give up or give in to that undeniable occupational headache, The Showdown didn't even think about going that route. No way, son. They elected to keep on keepin' on, a testament to their Southern work ethic and their passion for playing.

New bassist Jeremiah Scott produced early The Showdown records, so it made perfect sense for him to step into the rhythm section of the band and to man the boards on Blood in the Gears, their second album for Solid State Records. With Scott, the band gained a bassist and a songwriter! While The Showdown also enjoyed a measure of success in the past few years, including a slot on Ozzfest 2007 and even had the title track of their last album, 2008's Back Breaker, appear in the film Legion as well as on the wildly popular Charlie Sheen sitcom, Two and a Half Men, The Showdown continue to do things their way. without pretense and a whole truckload o' passion. The do things their way and the results? Well, they speak for themselves, especially with Blood in the Gears.

"We did it super punk rock and that had a lot to do with the way it turned out," vocalist David Bunton said of the process. "It's got different lyrical ideas that we had never really done before. But we got it done, which is totally metal, in that we didn't give up. We started in 1999 and played hundreds of show before we got signed, made a record or printed a t-shirt. Me and Josh were the two core members, making music and we love doing that still."

For Josh Childers, who previously wrote all of The Showdown's music, Blood in the Gears marked a significant left turn for him. He let the new members share in a bulk of the writing duties and responsibilities. "I did a lot less writing for this record," he admitted. "I wrote 90-95 percent of everything beforehand. This time, I have Jeremiah and Patrick writing riffs and arranging. I came into the process late and did more arranging and lyrics. They gave me more than enough material to work with." It wasn't any sort of changing of the guard in The Showdown camp; rather, it was a change of pace and new infusion of blood to course through those gears, with the band's signature, Southern metal sound firmly intact and in place.

Childers admits that giving up control and letting someone else take the reins was indeed scary. "I have been a control freak and I did not know how it would turn out," he said. "I was pessimistic, but when it came together, it came together. They did a great job and did it differently than I would have done it and that can be scary, but I have faith in the final product." Childers revealed that he stepped back because of simple writer's block and the fact that the band took some time off the road. "I haven't been with my guitar and hadn't written," he said. "Patrick and Jeremiah would spend six hours, locked up, playing riffs, so I respect the amount of work they did. Now, The Showdown is really collaborative, moreso than ever."

It was an unorthodox approach, but then again, The Showdown, like Ol' Blue Eyes, are content with doing things their way. "We have reached a pinnacle of doing things our way, internally within the band with this album," Childers said. "There was not even a consideration of pressure from anywhere else. We're not doing this because we want to be told what to do. I'd just work a 9 to 5 and make more money if I wanted that. We are not a slave to wage."

Childers admits that lyrically, The Showdown's first album, 2004's A Chorus of Obliteration boasted "Bible stories made metal" and that 2007's Temptation Come My Way was "more internal." He attests to 2008's Back Breaker being "all over the place," but says Blood in the Gears is themed around concept of the empire in history and the bad things it does to a culture. "It's the classic comparison of America to the fall of Rome," Childers said. "The central authority tends to distort and then have a revolution with the right intentions but when you centralize power, and it's not personal, it is bad for people in general and makes you less human. You become part of an empire, giving up more power to be more of a slave and less human. Dave and I really have something to say. It's not whining about breaking up with a girlfriend, but it's more world themes and represents a change in mindset. The whole theme is that we are the blood in the gears of the machine, that which greases the gears."

The Showdown also brought in guitarist Patrick Judge, who also serves as a guitarist in Demon Hunter. Judge joined the band because Scott kept "bugging me to jam" and Judge ended up "coming out, hanging out, playing a festival and never leaving. I was hanging around like a bad cough." Judge was happy to hunker down and write voraciously in his new role. "Josh and I trade off a lot [of the solos]. I do the first or second; he'll finish it off. There is a lot of that on the record."

Nearly every song has a solo, and there ain't nothing wrong with that. Judge even admitted, "This album is influenced heavily by Southern rock, like Pantera. With this record, all we listened to Pantera, Down, Black Label Society. You are supposed to ride a motorcycle while listening to this."

The rhythm section was for the recording was rounded out by Tim `Yogi' Watts, a longtime friend of the band and member of Demon Hunter, who stepped in and helped out as The Showdown sorted through some membership revolving doors. Yogi moved to Tennessee with Bunton, sat behind the kit for the band during its spring and summer tours in 2009 and recorded the drums for the new album. Due to some personal matters, Yogi was not able to join the band full time, even though he was welcome to.

Bunton also deems Blood in the Gears "an open-minded record. We have a song on there that is our Bon Jovi/Warrant 'Dead or Alive.' It's called 'Digging My Own Grave,' and it's an acoustic, Southern rock biker ballad. There is a nod to death metal too. And songs that sound like the devil." Amen to that.

Scott, who worked with the band as a producer before he was a member, was able to contribute music and to help foster the sound on the album now that he was actually in The Showdown officially. "They were jumping styles each record," he said. "This is just heavy Southern metal. It is not super thrashy or detuned or fast, or poppy. We just wrote heavy, Southern metal. It can have singing or screaming. It can be catchy or not catchy. Whatever the case, it's just heavy Southern metal that hits the nail on the head."

The album's opening song, "Man Named Hell", was partially written, by Scott's Harley-Davidson motorcycle. "We wrote the song, recorded the bike, and started to write riffs to the looping of the exhaust. After trying at it for a bit, Patrick realized that we had a similar riff in one of our demos. There was already an entire song attached to the riff so basically the Harley picked a tune out from our demos to be made into the intro for the album's first song," Scott said. Not many bands can lay claim to a motorcycle dictating and morphing into a riff, but The Showdown aren't like every other heavy rock band from the South.

The old saying is "American by birth, Southern by the grace of God." For The Showdown, it's more like "Southern by birth, metal by the Grace of God." Blood in the Gears demonstrates that fact from start to finish.

The sound and the line-up of Cool Hand Luke have always been in flux, and they probably always will be. It started with three teenage boys almost twelve years ago. All they wanted was to be able to play music for whoever would listen and to tell these people that Jesus is the only thing that will ever really matter. That has been the defining mark of Cool Hand Luke in whatever capacity it has existed. If that ever ceases, so will Cool Hand Luke. Soli Deo Gloria.

Since the spring of 2009, Mark Nicks has been touring solo with his vintage stage piano, performing Cool Hand Luke songs and telling the stories that inspired them. After constantly being asked if there were recordings of the solo arrangements, he decided to record a live record. Live at The Brown Owl captures a night with Nicks complete with funny and moving stories to accompany the songs.
